So what does the article say?

Regina, is "game information about Guild Wars 2, which are scheduled to be unveiled in the second half of 2009" correct?

It's quite possible to make the single player portion of the game access information to do with your character from their own servers. No one said it was offline singleplayer, did they?
However from how the article is put across it seems as if they are talking about a completely different game.

This needs a clarification!
Guild Wars 2 =
1.) ... Diablo style offline/online hybrid?
-> already declined by Regina
2.) ... single character MMO, no party in explorables e.g.
3.) ?

I think maybe what they meant is that it will be possible to go solo into explorable areas without getting ganked, ie you won't NEED H/H to play.

Sounds like Diablo 2 type system. I personally wouldn't mind it or like it. Maybe if they made it into a Elder Scrolls type RPG single player game. But that would take too much time.

Well, we've said several times that you will get information about GW2 later this year. We don't have exact dates announced, though.

GW2 will allow for different play styles, which includes people who like to play alone or in groups. Guild Wars 2 is definitely an MMORPG, meaning online play with the option of joining up with other people to play.

So what has really the Vice President of NCsoft said in the first quarter performance conference call held on May 11 said about GW2 and Single Player?
He said ~something~ which was then misquoted / mistranslated into this news piece which is now confirmed to be wrong. But what he really said?

On the English conference call the only mention of GW2 and ArenaNet was about their cash flow being depleted and that not being resolved until GW2, 13% loss q over q because of no new content, ncsoft europe being closed down because of unsuccessful smaller titles. Not all doom and gloom because of course they expected this without the new content. I don't hear mention on the English call of any development of GW2 or talk of the versioning so this may have been mentioned (and misinterpreted) in the Korean call.

You can tell me, I wont tell anyone else
We are ofcourse grasping at straws here, since theres been literally no gw2 information. And without hard facts, only speculation remains.
I think Inde tricked me, listened to all of that english conference call and there was no mention of the quoted text about single player

So basically Anet is going to go bankrupt if they don't release GW2 quickly.

Ignoring what Regina said about no single player GW2, which no offense to her, I take what any PR person says with a grain of salt.
All the people saying "oh noez, single player GWZ this will ruin the online bit, oh noez hacks, oh noez, monthly fee"
You all failed to read the article properly.
It said the Single player aspects of the MMO's are currently undergoing the "Feasability Study" phase. This means they are investigating whether the idea is even possible with regards to time, technology, cost etc. This means a few things:
A) It's not even certain the project would go ahead
and
B) It is nowhere near development stage.
Now considering (from what we've heard) that GW2 is quite far a long the development stage then assuming that they will not be seperate games is absolutely proposterous. Therefore worries about how it will effect the online play, the cost of the online GW etc etc etc are utterly stupid.
If the project where to go ahead I would imagine it to be like comparing the offline LotR games to the online LotR, while related with regards to the setting/franchise, they are no way related in game play or in any other way.

No Back Then, they mentioned that ArenaNet's revenue right now is from royalties from other NCSoft publishing entities and that their development cost is expensed.

P.S. I'm not sure I'm quite on board with the single player vs. MMO mode in the game. Unless they find a "bridge" to bring the achievements from single player mode over to the online environment, I doubt that single player mode would be viewed much more than a "beginner" or "escape" area for the MMO scene.

I have also been inactive for quite some time.
Yet when I come back, I still see the same discussions regarding solo play such as this thread, and still feel like replying because solo play in MMOs is my priority concern.
It is a waste to simply see them consider making a full offline version of an MMO instead of offering a fully enjoyable solo experience within the game itself.
WoW, LOTRO, and AoC have all successfully listened to their playerbase and implemented the ability to play solo with enjoyment.
GW has solo play yes, but the enjoyment is lessened by the not so good henchmen and their AI.
I will repeat my example of Factions protection hero as my prime example again as to how much solo play and henchmen are neglected in this game.

Well, the obvious guess would be that you CAN play Guild Wars 2 solo.
That is not new, as has been mentioned since Guild Wars 2 was first announced: You don't HAVE to play with others, but we'll make the game so cool, you'll probably want to.

I'm glad Regina quickly nipped this in the butt.
Besides, a single player version wouldn't make any sense. If the multiplayer version still has no online fee... why wouldn't you play it online?

HawkofStorms: if a single player version would reveal itself to be feasible, they could then perhaps tackle on other markets like consoles. Of course that now consoles also offer online playability but still

As a player of WoW since it launched I can say Guild Wars is world's above it in the solo department.

I think this is over. Anet cleared it up. Single player edition would suck anyways.
